Nanotechnology is a new material and system that exhibits new electrical, optical, chemical, or mechanical properties or performances that are involved in quantum mechanical phenomena and are no longer interpreted with classical mechanics and devices become smaller in nanoscale. Domestic researchers related to nanomaterials and devices are now preparing to leap to the world leading level.
In recent years, the academic importance and industrial necessity of nanotechnology have been emphasized and it is interconnected with the periodical/technical requirement of the 4th industrial revolution.
Nanotechnology has innate properties of basic science on fundamental research in nano or atomic scale and fusion research that make possible future connected society represented as IoT and the practical advent of 4th industrial revolution.
To nurture expertise in nanotechnology, the department of nano engineering is providing training courses covering all areas of technology from theoretical principles at nanoscale to practical applications aiming to cultivate expertise in various fields of nanotechnology (nanomaterials, nanodevices, and nanoprocesses).
To achieve academic diversity and fusion complexity, all curriculums were designed and operated by faculty with different academic backgrounds. The detailed education system is composed of core technologies (nano materials / nano devices / nano processes) and fusion application technology (nano energy / nanobiotechnology). Although it is a new department in the undergraduate school, it provides a world-class education course for "nurturing global science and technology talents in the field of nanoscience and fusion" based on experience of more than 10 years of research and education graduate school operation by attracting the BK21Plus project of the Ministry of Education.
The department of Nano Engineering, which was established in 2018, consider a graduate school (SAINT, SKKU Advanced Institute of Nano Technology) established in 2005 to nurture specialists in the fields of nano-fabrication and fusion as matrix. SAINT, started as korea's first fusion research center, has been recognized as one of the world’s top 10 research institutes and securing the best source technology regarding two-dimensional nano-materials including graphene in korea. (Ranked 1st in the world of graphene patents, selected in BK21 plus program 2014 / 1st re-selected in BK21 plus program 2016) The Department of nanoengineering is able to nurture creative leader-type nano-compositing experts capable of leading the future science and technology-based society by expanding the accumulated world-class R&D research capacity and education experience to undergraduate education.
In order to cope with the changes in the global technology trend of the 4th industrial revolution and the social changes facing the aging of the population,
it is very important to nurture professional manpower in the field of fusion technology capable of contributing to future new industries and activation of business based on expert knowledge.
